Samuel Hayman. Born 1786 Buckfastleigh. Died ?
« on: Saturday 24 October 20 09:52 BST (UK) »
Samuel Hayman was baptised in Buckfastleigh 26 November 1786.
He married Elizabeth Lee in Dean Prior on 11 August 1805. Elizabeth died in 1839 and in 1841 Samuel was living with his daughter, Agnes, in Jephers Baker's cottage Staverton, Devon.
Agnes (b 1826) married Henry Field in 1846. In 1851 they were living together in a household that contained a number of lodgers, but no Samuel.
I cannot find Samuel elsewhere on the census  and the only intervening  death is for a Samuel Hayman, Mar Q 1851. Totnes, age 73, which is considerably at variance from "my" Samuel's age of 65. A later death in Sep 1855 Totnes, for a Samuel Hayman, age 62, is not a very comfortable match either.
Any help in tracing record of Samuel's death will be much appreciated.

Thanks, John, but I think you'll find that is Samuel Hayman, born Ashprington, Greenwich pensioner, his wife Susanna and grand daughter, Susan Burgoyne, 1861 & 1871.

Thanks, John. I certainly never thought it look there, or then.
I have found him on Deceased on Line, but no additional personal information, so not able to confirm his identity. Not sure the death certificate would be very conclusive either. Think I may have a struggle to establish a connection.

The Samuel HAYMAN aged 73 was buried at Staverton 30 March 1851 with his home address given as Littlehempston. (Agnes was living at Broadhempston at the time). This would make him born ca 1777/8 and there was a Samuel HAYMAN baptised in Buckfastleigh 21 Sept 1777, son of Samuel & Margaret.

Having to rely solely on 1841 census to identify Samuel Hayman  means that inevitably it is somewhat speculative. His age is shown as 55, suggesting birth between 1782-6. However as not all adult ages appear to have been rounded down, that could have been his true age. In either case, the closest baptism appears to be that of Samuel, son Phillip and Mary, at Buckfastleigh on 26 November 1786. Unfortunately he did not name a son Phillip, nor have I been able to find Samuel, baptised 1777 at Buckfastleigh, in 1841 which would have added strength to my conjecture.
