What does this marriage license say?
« on: Saturday 24 October 20 12:32 BST (UK) »
This is from a marriage license from 1737. A widowed farmer intended to marry a 22 year old spinster. I can read "She is no... H? (?) and he has the consent of her...parents to marry her". Can anyone read the word following "no"?
Warwickshire - Thompson, Johnson, Sinar/Siner, Abbott, Hewitt, Smith, West,
Gloucestershire - Williams, Powell, Pigeon, Pullen
Wiltshire - Cullis, Matthews
Flintshire - Jones, Evans
Yorkshire - Bennett, Coleman, Rhodes

Ditto - Heiress

Ah yes, I can see that now. Seems obvious now you've said it  ;D What a strange thing to clarify. I suppose they're making it clear he isn't marrying her for her money.

The wording is consistent with a Marriage Allegation rather than the Licence itself.

The phrases in question are:

...& yt she is no Heiress & yt he has ye free Consent
her parents
[sic] to marry her...

yt = that
ye = the

That's really interesting Yorkshireborn.

I have one like this for one of my ancestors written in 1736 - I see yours was 1737.
I'd never come across it before in all the licences I've looked at.
Mine not only says she is 'no heiress' , but goes on to compound it, to say 'and has no prospects'!
It's a very unusual thing to find.
I wonder if there was some reason behind this around this point in time?
Something may have happened that necessitated putting in a clause like that?

Mine was from Derby. Where was yours from?

The couple married in Alfreton in Derbyshire, although the groom was of Nottinghamshire, so not far from Derby. Very interesting!
