Completely stuck - can anybody help
« on: Sunday 25 October 20 10:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi
My 2x-great-grandparents William John McMillan (abt 1843-1879) and Ellen (Eleanor) Logan (abt 1844-1916) married in St Anne's in Belfast on 24 Apr 1864.

William John McMillan was a painter aged 21 - father Archibald McMillan - gardener
Ellen was a dressmaker aged 20 - father Henry Logan - farmer
I think they were Presbyterians. Ellen's mother was Mary born about 1823, died 1891. (I managed to order Mary's death certificate).

I can't find when Henry Logan died or details of his marriage to Mary. I don't know Mary's maiden name.

I can't find when Archibald McMillan died or who the mother of William John McMillan was. I'm not sure if they came over from Scotland (I've got 20% Scottish DNA and a bit of Irish).

The McMillan spelling changes from McMillan to McMillen which adds confusion. I don't know if either William John McMillan or Ellen Logan had siblings.

I'm completely stuck and was hoping somebody might have some suggestions or could help.

Many thanks
Louise

You have Ellen born 1884 married 1864.

Please amend/clarify.

How do you know that Ellen's mother was Mary?

Thanks Chempat.
I was so busy trying to put all the information in that I had, that I didn't double check I'd put the date in correctly!  Ellen was born around 1844 - according to her marriage certificate and death certificate.

Mary Logan is definitely her mother as on Mary's death certificate is says that "Ellen McMillen, daughter, was present at death 18 Hudson Street". Until I got the death certificate I hadn't been certain Mary was her mother as a "Mary Logan" was present at the birth of most of Ellen's children but the death certificate confirmed Mary as mother.

Thanks Louise

Does Ellen/Eleanor say she was born in Belfast on 1901 and 1911 censuses?

There are only 5 Henry Logan deaths in Ireland from 1864 (start of registration) until 1891 (when Mary died).

I wonder who this person was:

in the Belfast, Northern Ireland, The Belfast Newsletter (Birth, Marriage and Death Notices), 1738-1925 (Ancestry)
Sarah Lyttle
Death:
18 Jan 1877
Publication Date:
20 Jan 1877
Belfast, Northern Ireland

It says she was of 18 Hudson Street.

I'm not seeing anything on Irish Genealogy.

Maureen
