Help needed, please
« on: Monday 26 October 20 10:37 GMT (UK) »
I can't seem to find any birth information or parental information on a 10 x Great Grandfather called Israel Giew/Gue. He died 1692 in Gussage All Saints, Dorset, England. He married a Grace Lane.

I have reason to believe he may have been Jewish due to his first and last name? not entirely sure though or if this would be the reason I can't find any type of birth record. Could anyone help?

Many thanks!

Thank you for the info.

I did see him in quite a few online trees but also couldn't find any sources for his birth on them either. But the one in Hampshire looks promising.

Would I be right in thinking he may be Jewish? my Dad seems to think the surname Gue/Giew stands for Jew.

If you google  'Surname Gue' some sites suggest that it is French.

If he was Jewish he would not have been baptised.

Last name: Gue

Recorded as Delagua, Dugue, Duguet, Gue, and probably others, this is a French surname. It is cognate with the English word and surname 'Ford', being residential, and describing somebody who lived by a shallow river crossing, or who may have come from a   town or village of the same name.

There are several websites where you can enter a surname and it will give information of historical country of distribution.  I tried a French website and discovered Gue was common to several areas of France.

Websites showing Distribution of surname Gue

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Surname_Distribution_Maps

and on the subject of the familysearch website, they have several French bap;tisms of people born "Gue" living along the coast of France in Brittany/Bretagne,

Biblical names are very common in some families. My grandfather had an uncle Israel with siblings Rebekah, Elias, Susannah, etc. and they weren't Jewish.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
