Hi

Does anybody know offhand whether the first duke of Wellington, Sir Arthur Wellesley has any Lancashire connections? My granddad apparently used to visit a big house (dont know where, he lived in Blackburn) with butlers, who were descendents in some way of Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. We are talking about the 1890's, and apparently a family member of ours (Shaw) married into an offshoot of the Wellesleys.

I can find no evidence of this, or of a Wellesley connection to lancashire, nor of where this big house of the Wellesleys could have been. I am assuming its in Lancashire because of the logistics of travelling in the 1890s.

Wellesley was Irish but not of Irish stock apparently ... he detested Scotsmen allegedly, said a  horse was worth more than 2 scotsmen, also, in battle, 'send in the scots, it doesn't matter if they don't come back!'

That's why his statue in Queen Street, Glasgow permanently wears a traffic cone as a dunce's cap.

on that website if you look in the Surnames Index for Shaw you will find many connections to Dublin, the birthplace of Arthur Wesley before he changed his name to Wellesley.  Shaw is also one of the family names of the Earls of Cathcart

Edmond Ernest Charles Wellesly married in Lancashire .to Florence Sarah Louisa Platt, he died young and she remarried, they don't appear to have lived in Lancashire after the marriage ,
Sarah was from Werneth  Park in Lancashire daughter of John Platt who was an MP for Oldham perhaps this may be where your family went to visit

Edmond Ernest Charles Wellesley had an Uncle Captain Arthur Richard Wellesley who died in 1830

The Platt, Less and Radcliffe families bought the triangular plot of land that formed Werneth Park from the Werneth Hall estate in or about 1844. Each of the families (two Radcliffes) built "mill town mansions" in the upper reaches of the Park overlooking its large landscaped field.

John Platt (1817-1872) of Platt Brothers textile machinery manufacturers. His entry in Grace's Guide to British Industrial History. Profile includes an obituary. https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/John_Platt
He moved to Werneth Park in 1848. Florence S.L. Platt was aged 1 year on 1861 census. There were a dozen children, 7 sons.
