James McDonald, 21st Regiment (Royal North British Fusiliers)
« on: Monday 26 October 20 14:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Two related queries.

1.

Trying to find the service records of James McDonald, private of the Royal North British Fusilier's 21st regiment when he married Mary Thompson in Belfast, 1867, aged 30.

2.

I've found James in Anderson St in the 1901 and 1911 census. Boarding with him is a Patrick Healy Farrelly, who is the 15 year old son of widower Peter Farrelly who died 1889 in the same street, and was a Sgt in the 74th foot. Is it likely that the two army pensioners, from different regiments, were just neighbour friends and the McDonalds took the boy in after Peter's death? Any thoughts welcome.

There are a number of James McDonald's b. c. 1837 on FindMyPast service records.
You need a sub.
2nd. question, they may well have become friends having so much in common so it's
quite possible he asked for his son to be taken in.
Difficult to deny a dying man's wishes.

Thanks both - I've found a few possible candidates on Find my past, but not a full army record as I have done with others, so if anyone has a link worth checking out, do please forward here.

Thanks for the idea about the priest, Dathai - I hadn't considered that.

All best!
