I thank you all,
As usual the wonderful people on this site have triumphed again.
But two things still elude us the baptisim of James Francis Byrne, which would give us his parents and his marriage to Ellen Hicks.
As we now know they were Catholic would this hinder research?

Thanks,
bswinno.

There's a marriage for a James Byrne & Ellen Hicks in New Jersey in 1918.  Certificate number is 05228.  I don't think NJ marriages from that time frame are online anywhere.

There's also an entry with the same certificate number and year for Ellen Murphy & James Byrne, so perhaps it was Ellen's 2nd marriage.

shellyesq when you say the same certificate number what is that referring to?
Did you notice the two children shown in the 1920 census would have been born before 1918?

The certificate number for their marriage on the New Jersey index.

William and Margaret were in the 1925 NY state census and the 1930 & 1940 census with aunt Margaret Kruse.  However, the younger Margaret was listed as Margaret Murphy, so I guess she was from Ellen's 1st marriage.

1925 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KSCV-L44

1930 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X453-WKJ

1940 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQP3-BC2

William was in the National Guard in 1939-1940 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVJY-N2GL

I wonder if this might be Ellen/Helen/Nellie with her 1st husband in 1910.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M59Y-PG1

Looks like this William might have died in 1912 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WNW-2H3 , so that would fit with the daughter born circa 1911 and Ellen being free to remarry in 1918.

Wow shellyesq that's some researching you have turned up.

I congratulate and thank  you on your expertise.
I notice on that 1910 census for William and Nellie Murphy that they had been married 14 years.
Had six children but none living.

Also that he just missed out on the birth of daughter Margaret
Thanks,
bswinno.
