Barony 1851 Census
« on: Tuesday 27 October 20 16:24 GMT (UK) »
My ancestors lived on Main Street 622/242/5, I am searching for a Robert Scott age 25 to 35 close to their location.  622 is Barony but what is 242/5?  I have a copy of the 1851 Census from SP and it has Parish as Calton, Burgh of Glasgow, Household 18, 220 Main Street.  I did find a post commenting on the size of Barony in 1851 so am assuming Calton was writhing Barony at that time.  Look forward to replies.

Enumeration District No 242, Page 5.

Are you using the FreeCEN transcription https://freecen1.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl ?

PS like the idea of 'writhing Barony' :) Is that the dreaded predictive text striking again?

Thanks for the info.  Yes predictive text, I meant “within”.   Results on freecen were 8 for Robert Scott in Barony and on SP 5 in Barony.  Only one was an obvious match.  Is there a list of enumeration districts on line? Would 242 be close to 245 or 258?  Such a common name and I could be looking in the wrong place but my GG Grandmother named my Great Grandfather after him so I think there was a relationship.

You should be able to work out which EDs are close to one another by studying the headers at the beginning of each ED in conjunction with a town plan.

See https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/guides/census-returns#Description%20of%20ED and go to 'Description of Enumeration District'.

If you are looking for the father of an illegtimate child, have you seen

Thank you Forfarian and Monica.  I found the paternity decree and tried to order tonight but it would not go through.  Will try during business hours tomorrow.  I must have missed it first time round as I usually check Old Scottish and Scottish Indexes.  Hoping for an address and occupation!

I am going to start a new post for Robert Scott and close this off.  Old Scottish has had some issues with online ordering.  If I do the original paternity search on my ipad this particular record is not included but when I use my windows laptop there it is.  I hope you will give me some suggestions on the new post.  Thanks again.

I received a paternity decree for my GG, Jessie Scott born 10 July 1849 illegitimate to Margaret Burk, Mill Worker, residing in Main Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow, pursuer, against Robert Scott, Waiter, residing at East Rose Street, Calton, Glasgow.  The decree was signed 18 July 1853.  I can find a Robert Scott, a labourer, at 20 East Rose Street, Glasgow in the 1855 Valuation Rolls but not on 1851 Census.  This Robert was an unredeemed pledge dealer on Jessie's Marriage (1870) and Death (1931) records. I have not found a birth record for Jessie either.  Assistance much appreciated.
