WW1 Soldier, What Regiment?
« on: Tuesday 27 October 20 16:39 GMT (UK) »
I have a photograph of an Ancestor dressed in Uniform from WW1 and I am trying to identify his Regiment, to see if I can find his service records. The man is William Wootton and he was Born in December 1893 in Byford in Herefordshire. I definitely know that he survives the War. I have tried the wonderful Great War Forum and they have looked at the cap badge and said it most likely either
Queen’s Own Worcestershire Hussars Yeomanry or
Army Veterinary Corps

From his boots it suggests a mounted soldier definitely.

Are there any other indications of rank in the picture???

Any help appreciated as I am trying to search to find his records. Many thanks

Paul

I believe him to be William Wooton who served first in the City of London Yeomanry (he is wearing that regiments cap badge which is similar to the Queens Own Worcestershire Hussars).  He served subsequently in the London Regiment and the Army Service Corps.

A medal card in that name is here:

There don't appear to be any surviving records apart from that and the associated award roll.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thats Brilliant! Thanks Max I am eternally grateful, although there is only a medal roll, its so important to identify the right man, I will check the newspapers, now I have a regiment, he could possibly get a mention there, you never know, thanks again for your help

Must emphasise my "believe him to be" based on my ID of the cap badge (which others may challenge) and the fact that there are no Wootons showing up in either of the regiments suggested.  Does a London based Territorial unit fit with what you know of him pre-war?

All I know is he was from Herefordshire, but he did have a sister who lived in London, so there is a family connection to that area.

I am trying to get my elderly great aunt to go through the documents she has at home, but because of her age and frailty and because I cant visit because of lockdown, I'm stuck with just her memory and the picture. Im hopeful she might have some more papers at home.

Thanks Alan, that was one of the original thoughts, I just need the one piece of additional evidence to corroborate the regiment.

I woke up to some wonderful news from my Great Aunt, bless her she’s in her 80’s and because of lockdown I’ve not been able to see her for a while, we just have our weekly phone call.

She messaged over night to say she has a photo of William in a kilt which has written on the back Army Veterinary Corp and Seaforth Highlanders, so I now have his details. I will post a photograph once she has sent me a copy.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their help, as always I’m extremely grateful.
