Help Double Check Before I Hit The Delete Key
« on: Wednesday 28 October 20 11:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I've been trying to write up stories for people in my tree and have found a couple of people on my wife's who just don't fit. The more I look the more I think they are wrong and just shouldn't be there but I'm hoping someone could double check before I delete them. They are on a few people's tree on Ancestry but I'm thinking they may have been blindly copied (as I did).

The two people are:

Rabella Rutherford Beavers b.1879 in Newcastle and
John Alexander Beavers b.1879 in Newcastle.

They are supposedly the children of Herbert Beavers and Mary Eskdale who lived in North Shields.

I think the problem comes from the 1911 census because when you look at Herbert Beavers on it, Rale (Rabella) and John come up on the transcription on the same page as if they were his children but with the surname of Rutherford, however when you click on their names you are taken to the neighbouring property.

Herbert appears to be the manager of Uncle Tom's Cabin (I know!) while Rale and John appear to be neighbours at number 32 Bedford Street rather than relatives. It isn't helped by the fact that none of the three people on their page are listed as the head, they are all son or daughter.

Just to slightly complicate it further their are Rutherfords in that tree although not too close.

The 1911 census does help a bit in that it says Herbert and Mary had 5 children and all are alive, going off earlier census would be:

Robert Eskdale b.1882
Herbert b.1885
Mary Ann b.1886
William George b.1890
Clarence b.1893

Rale and John would make 7 children and I can't see them on any earlier census.

Can anyone help me by looking at the 1911 census and see if I'm now reading it right before I delete these extra two please please?

Thanks a lot,

Michael

I now always double check children’s births on the gro website which shows the mother’s maiden name. It has certainly helped sort out a few families.

Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

Neither comes up as a birth with surname Beavers

But there is:

John Alexander Rutherford  mmn Bell,  birth JFM 1879 Newcastle on Tyne

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks very much jc26red and lizdb,

I'm trying to get into the GRO website but am having problems logging in but lizdb may have confirmed it for me there.

Good tip about the GRO site though, I'll have to start doing that.

Thanks a lot,

Michael

There are only three children with Herbert and Mary in 1911.

There is no-one called Rale living next-door. The person you have got as Rale actually appears to be called Kate!

Kate Rutherford, 1q 1877, Newcastle upon Tyne 10b, 74, mother's maiden surname Bell.

Where on earth have the other folks on Ancestry got Rabella Beavers from?

Re Uncle Tom's Cabin, a friend of mine is descended from one of the original owners  :)

Thanks a lot JenB,

So that is another transcription error, now you've said that I've looked and would completely agree with you.

My father in law told me about the reputation of the place until I mentioned I'd found one of his relatives was manager there, suddenly it changed to "it wasn't that bad a place really"  ;D

I think I'm confident enough now to hit that delete key.

Thanks for the help everyone.

My friends ancestor was Henry Aynsley who had Uncle Tom's Cabin back in the 1850's.

The Ancestry transcription is wonderful.

I see that in the household are Habella and Rale Rutherford, who are actually Isabella and Kate living in a totally separate household next door.

Herbert, is apparently the manager of the Union Sims Cabin Hotel.

The moral of this is always look at the original  ;)
