Merchant navy deaths
« on: Thursday 29 October 20 21:08 GMT (UK) »
The family were always told that THOMAS SHORE merchant seaman (grandfather in law) was buried in Australia. (possibly fell off a gangplank!) Nothing more was ever said.

However recently I have found the following record:
Ship: Dornoch 165959 Glasgow
Death: 13th September 1951  Newcastle
Thomas Shore b 1888 Fireman trimmer
Remarks: 156967
Born: Brotton
Last place of abode: South Shields
No cause of death is given and I can find no civilian record of this death, if it was in Newcastle.
Can anyone shed light as to why no cause of death was given or how more information could be found? I would love to solve this mystery.

At the top is written "accident ashore" on the record you already have I think but as you say no more elaboration on that  :(

Many thanks for that information; at least it disproves the Australian burial. I don't know where that came from but it seems to have been widely believed by the grandchildren.

I am still curious as to the cause of death.

Kind regards.

Thank you,
The record I found was not very clear and I couldn't see the 'accident ashore'.

I am still not sure why I haven't found a BMD record if he died ashore. Are there different records for the forces?

This is Newcastle Australia isn't it not Newcastle England so the registration of his death would be there wouldn't it?  I don't know what death registrations are like for Australia or how detailed they are.

Goodness, I didn't realise. It would make sense then. I was led astray by the fact it just said 'Newcastle' on the death record. I missed Newcastle (England) on the obituary. It also explains why it mentions his ship but not his wife and family.

Many thanks for your help.

maybe "find a grave " might show a headstone - but I will be surprised at that - as who would have paid for it ?? :o
