www.forest-of-dean.net and checked under their resources:  Gloucestershire Marriage Licence Allegations 1637-1837 and Marriage Bonds 1730-1823 and by putting the symbol % in the surname - there are 770 in total  - just for BRISTOL (mostly there are two copies, one being the Bond, the other the Licence.... residence: Bristol

In total, there are 152,080 bonds/licences on the above website.

Christopher LUDLOW of St Thomas in the City of Bristol 4th Nov 1757

The Licence: gives his age as 22 and a Batchelor to marry Martha BODDOME aged 22, a Spinster of Stroud, sworn to marry beforew Ste Phillips to marry at Stroud

the second one the Bond

says, Christopher LUDLOW is a Yeoman of St Thomas in the City of Bristol to Martha BEDDOME

Witness is: William DALLAWAY a Clothier of Stroud

The groom and William DALLAWAY are bound in the sum of £500

Sugarbakers is the one with the main interest in Samuel Peach, as S.P. ran a sugar house in partnership with Samuel Henderson for many years.

Capetown: Don't think that's our Samuel Peach. We've connected him to Tockington. Checked his will on Ancestry - his wife was Sarah, though no mention of sugar or Henderson - but I won't be summarising that will ........... it runs into 39 pages !

Sugarbakers: just out of curiosity this morning I checked, and Samuel Peach is listed as a HABERDASHER in both the 1754 and 1774 Poll Books. He's an out-voter in the parish of Olveston in 1774 which at least confirms that he was living at Tockington House by that time. Haberdashery is mostly things like buttons, ribbons and laces, so it's quite possible that Samuel had an assistant, or one or two of his womenfolk, running the shop while he was off at the sugar refinery. Haberdashers were very often linen-drapers too, and the terms seem to have been used interchangeably.

Interestingly, while most of the Bristol parishes had between two and four sugar bakers in 1774, St. James had a grand total of twelve!
