Glen Hall employees & Employers Leicestershire

Looking for anecdotes photos and descendants of employers and staff who would have worked with Donald McKINNON and wife Elin who  moved to Leicester shortly after their marriage

Elin Mckinnon is on the 1911 census in a lafrge house ..32 south knighton road ..husband away


Their first child Malcolm  was born 1913  in gamekeepers lodge the house attached to Glen Hall where Donald Mckinnon worked fot Theodore WALKER

By first world war the scotsman welsh woman and english born child were tenents of llywyn y Brain

Before Leicester the couple lived in Carham .

There was a strong link with their employers reverend ANDERSON of Carham m
& fanny evelyn WALKER daughterb of Theodore & seem to have brought their ex employees to Great Glen

Sons dr theodore farnwoth ANDERSON 1901_1979 lived Ruparts roost great glen in 1933

John Robert Anderson 1905_ 92 lived at Glen Hall before embarking for Kenya 1922

But what of the employees at the Hall
He had lived at Glen Hall

Glen Hall was owned by the PACKE family

In 1911 army capt Edward Christopher PACKE was at nearby STRETTON HALL
With wife of 3 years two young children and his mother
5 servants are specifically listed as being Mrs m PACKEs servants
Coachman William Elliot HUNWICK is married but
 the housemaid Ellen Hunwick(HURWICH?) is listed as single unless it's a mistake

Parlourmaid Ellen CONWAY
Cook Emily PRIOR
General servant Florence Edith PEAK

And an Ayah (domestic servant) b india Sarah ARETRION

Theodore WALKER widower age 66 (had been married 49 years 4 or 6 ? Children ) hosiery manufacturer

Living with
With single daughter Annie Gertrude WALKER 29 sg both born leicester
& sister sarah francis Smith 60 sg b Salop Shrewsbury

They have 4 servants
Margaret AHarrison BLENKINSOPP 54 cook bbedinburough
Alice GREYSON  30. b.. ? Celia CLARK 20 b .Leicestershire. housemaids
Evelyn amy ROWLEY  19  b frolesworth leics kitchenmaid

Did these emloyees stay with their employers for years ? What happened when.emloyer died ?

My mother wrote a book about the Packes and houses of Great Glen it was published in 2005 so she did not have access to 1911 census or the information about the chauffeurs Scottish Welsh Englsih McKINNON family
Or the 1939 registration.

She  has since been contacted by a descendant writing a memoire about them for his family ...not commercial .

Im doing my best to find out what I can about the other workers at that time

The 1939 register interests me because evacuees were living at the hall

When Theodore WALKER died the owner  Colonel Edwin Christopher PACKE  moved back.into the hall
His wife olive Rachel Nora had passed away

in 1939 he was listed as retired army officer b14.11. 1877

The line below must be his youngest daughter Margaret b 1922 d Oram.a decade ago

Janet E DRAPER b15 .1.1904  domestic service

Constance E BONNER widow b 8.12.1893 school teacher

*closed line .....a young employee ? Or an evacuee Maybe married name Dean
Vera Howes b 1.11.1928 at school

Presumably evacuees

So by then were employees mostly living outside the hall or were they managing without ?

Heres a photo 1922 0f  baby Margaret Packe  outside GLEN or Stretton. HALL with her nurse

1911 the Packe family were at STRETTON.HALL

1939 they were living at Glen Hall
