Ambrose Thornet/Thornitt
« on: Sunday 01 November 20 16:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
can anybody help me to find details of the marriage of Ambrose Thornet/Thornitt b.1719 Sutton under Brailes. I know his wife's name was Margaret, their children were Stephen b.1750, William b.1753, Ann b.1765, and John b.1769. His parents were Ambrose Thornet and Mary Mallet m.1711 Tysoe. His grandparents were Stephen and Margaret Thornet.
Thanks in advance.

Stefan

I'm not sure if this is the correct marriage, but an Amrose Thornet of Whichford, Warwickshire, Wheelwright - married Margaret Sims (or Tims) of Hooks Norton, Oxfordshire on 6 Jan 1746 at Spelsbury, Oxfordshire.

The filmed record is really faint (Oxfordshire marriages on Ancestry). Margaret's surname transcribed as Sims - but looks like it may be Tims.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

I think you've cracked it.  According to the AA Route Planner:
Sutton-under-Brailes to Whichford 7.3 miles.
Sutton-under-Brailes to Spelsbury 12.8 miles.
Spelsbury to Hooks Norton 9.7 miles
Spelsbury to Whichford 10.1 miles.
All the locations would fit into a circle of well under 10 miles radius.

Well done Philip! I don't get on with maps at all, so that is useful. (I often get lost!)

Thanks for that Pennine. It certainly looks possible, and alternatives appear to be non existant. I'll need to look into the Sims/Tims option - there are families of both in Oxfordshire.

Stefan -- there are 2 records - one will be Bishops Transcripts, but not identified as such.

Also the couple were married by Licence, which may be at Oxfordshire Archives. To me the surname looks more like Tims.

I hadn't spotted the 2nd record initially - only the one transcribed as Sims. I think it's Tims, but I hope others will give their views on this. The licence should help if you locate it. I have attached the extract showing her name.

Yes -- now it's been enlarged, it looks even more like Tims than it did on the original sized filmed copy. Thank you Rosie.

Just to muddy the waters...the Index to Oxford Diocesan Marriage Bonds and Affadvits has got the bride transcribed as Margaret KIMS.
But I would say it was Tims from the extracts shown here.
