Annette Annette Annette!  :o

Who is my hero!?

I have not gone through all of this in any fine detail yet as I am dashing off to an appointed or 10,  but tears came into my eyes when I scanned and read the name Annie Butler!

I will reply properly ASAP but just wanted to say thank you for all the work you did. This has made a lot of people's day!

Have a great one! You rock

Kim

So Excited  ;D

I added all the information you have given me so generously to my tree on Ancestry and now we have hints a flying all over the place!

To expand on the significance of the boarder Ann Butler in the 1871 Census...Ann was the sister of George Butler; Letitia's future husband.

Now to George.

I cannot confirm who George's father was. I fear/expect it may be another convoluted story.

all I have for his birth is a record that says

First name(s)   GEORGE WILLIAM
Last name   BUTLER
Birth year   1861
Birth quarter   1
Registration month   -
Mother's maiden name   Bithrey

From this, I found that his mother was Ann Bithrey c. 1830-1901.

Ann Bithrey had another son Walter Butler 1860-1869 and a daughter Annie Elizabeth Butler 1864-1954 (born in Kingston on Thames).

I cannot locate Ann or George in the 1871 Census, let alone a father. Walter was dead and Annie Elizabeth was at her grandparent's house in Turvey aged 7.

The only real clue we have about George Snr is from his daughter's Marriage in 1883 which makes it look like he is alive and working as a painter, but his wife Ann listed herself as a widow in 1881.

So I am confused.  Are you able to help please?

Great work Annette7!

"why Letitia married as Letitia Howe (when her legal name was Letitia How(e) Pedel) I have no idea.   Interesting to know who she named as father (if given as Howe this could identify who he was in Wendover) or she may have left the details blank."

This was very common in Scotland, illegitimate children using their fathers surnames in later life but it would also look better from the point of view of the in-laws  :D

Edit to add...

I don't believe there was ever a marriage between Ann Bithrey and a Butler (be it a George or someone else).

Have found Ann in 1871 - transcribed on Ancestry as 'Barler' - RG10 - 1484 - 103 - 25 - in Northampton

Anne Barler     39   widow    Dressmaker         b. Turvey, Bedfordshire
Walter   "         11                                          b. Market Harborough, Leics.
George  "         10                                           b. Northampton

So, Ann was calling herself a widow by 1871, and son Walter still very much alive.
