Seeking info on marriage of James Shaw McCrindle and Mary Elizabeth Johnson
« on: Wednesday 04 November 20 20:39 GMT (UK) »
Information request (please) on the marriage of James Shaw McCrindle and Mary Elizabeth Johnson, I'm told in Ayrshire, Scotland. The only child I can see that they have is a daughter Ellen, born in Ireland in 1908, but I'm unsure if they had children prior to this. They lived in Ireland by then and was employed there. James died aged 38 in 1909, and I think the family returned to Scotland (have nothing definite on this) Thanks in advance.

I had a look for the marriage in Ireland, England & Scotland but did not find it. I looked for the family in the 1901 & 1911 Irish censuses but did not find them anywhere in Ireland.  They were in Eshnaglogh, Co Monaghan in 1908/9 but had gone by 1911.

Don’t see them in Scotland in the 1911 census. I also looked for Mary’s death in Scotland but did not find it either.

I searched a newspaper archive for a report on James’ inquest but did not find any mention of it.

Thank you for that, he’s a mystery man! Yes, you are correct about his location of Eshnaglough, and he died in a shooting accident when his child Ellen was 1 year old. Would love to know more about his roots and what became of his widow afterwards. He is buried in Ireland.

Hi,

There was a birth in Dailly, Ayrshire on 24th June 1872 of a James McCrindle to a George McCrindle and an Elizabeth Shaw  which might be of interest.

I have often found people acquire middle names which are not recorded on their birth certificates as they go through life. The 'Shaw' in James McCrindle's name could be a nod to his mother's maiden name.

Looby :)

Looking at the 1881 census indexes on Scotlandspeople, I see George McCrindle 27, Elizabeth 34, James 8, William 7, Agness 4 & Alexr 1 in Straiton, Ayrshire. GROS ref 617/4/2. The family are on several trees on Ancestry. From that I note that George was a gamekeeper. Since that was also James' later profession, it feels likely to be the right family. They were in Peeblesshire in 1891 with James aged 18, and in Derbyshire in the 1901 & 1911 censuses. James had left home by 1901. Elizabeth died in Bakewell Derbyshire in 1922.

Can you tell us how you arrived at their full names & area of Ayr please?

Who in the family do you descend from with details of their birth year & place?

OK, thank you for your help, the death of James goes down through local lore. It looks like George the gamekeeper as the father may be the correct place to look. I took an interest in James as he worked locally in Ireland as a gamekeeper on a rural estate. I was interested in his death, and what became of his wife and child(ren), I have heard they returned to Scotland. He is buried locally at the mausoleum where he was employed, though the headstone has got badly damaged by fallen trees down the years, but is still legible. Thanks again.

Daughter was Ellen MacBeth McCrindle

Knowing middle names can often be a great help, however, it hasn't helped in locating her or her mother so far.
