Charles O'Neil
« on: Thursday 05 November 20 15:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for the parents of CHARLES O'NEIL born circa 1846 . He married SARAH DEVLIN on 25th Jul 1867 in Coagh Cookstown. His fathers name was Daniel O'Neil. I have all the information after he went to England but I would like to go back further if possible so any help would be great.

Many thanks Fran....

O'Neills were thick on the ground, but just a possibility to note in a couple called Daniel O'Neill and Mary Rourke, who were having children in the 1830s/40s at Trickvallen (which borders Elagh), one of whom was a son Charles baptised on 25 February 1843 (left page at link below):

If you are researching the origins of    "...Charles O'NEIL born circa 1846....married Sarah DEVLIN on 25th Jul 1867 in Coagh Cookstown."

then -

"... all the information after he went to England......"

would be very useful to a forum.

What children did they have.....where / when did Charles and Sarah die?....what occupation for Charles?

... but just a possibility to note in a couple called Daniel O'Neill and Mary Rourke ...

There are things that feel 'wrong' about the following death registration for a Mary O'Neill in 1876, but I'll post it anyway, as it intrigued me:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1876/020570/7218038.pdf

First off, I imagine that Sarah (Devlin) O'Neill was in Elagh at that point, as she gave birth to her son Patrick there in 1877 and her previous children were also born there. But if the informant in this death record is her, why was she recorded as Devlin rather than O'Neill?  Unless it's a different person, ie. a Sarah Devlin living in Elagh at that point (not an uncommon surname). Then there's Mary's age... if accurate, trying to read it across to the same person as the previously mentioned Mary Rourke would mean that when she had her run of 5 children (including Charles) in the 1830s/40s, she was in the 40-50 age bracket... not impossible, but pushes against the flow of probability in my mind. Anyhow, to note for now until it can be ruled in or out.

Hi, Thank you so much for your time and help ! I had great fun trying to decipher the writing on the very helpful link you sent !! I am going to do some more research thanks to you I have a few more avenues to look into. I have Charles O'Neil in England's censuses from 1881 where he was in Thornaby Yorkshire and was a Labourer In Iron Works  He has ( up until now ) 5 sons John,Thomas,Charles, Patrick and Daniel. First 4 sons were born in Co. Tyrone.   It is Daniel's granddaughter I am doing the research for.
Once again many thanks to you and also wivenhoe for your help.

Best regards Fran .......

Just a slight nod towards the notion that Daniel O'Neill and Mary Rourke may have been the parents of the Charles O'Neill who married Sarah Devlin...

- when Charles O'Neill and Sarah Devlin had their son John O'Neill on 15 August 1868 at Elagh (per civil record), he was then baptised on 16 August and the Arboe RC parish record shows the sponsors as Thomas and Ann O'Rourke (left page):

'16th, John of Charles ONeil & Sarah Devlin
S Ths + Ann O'Rourke'

- when Charles O'Neill and Sarah Devlin had their son Charles on 20 May 1872 at Elagh (per civil record), he was then baptised on 25 May and the Arboe RC parish record shows the sponsors as Patrick and Alice Rourke (left page):

'25th, Chs of Chs ONeil & Sarah Devlin
S Patk + Alice Rourke'

BTW, here's the marriage of Daniel O'Neill and Mary Rorke on 27 (January or February?) 1831 in the Arboe parish register, the location was definitely Elagh, the witnesses were Michael Campbell and Edward Rorke (top of right page):

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632463#page/147/mode/1up

The last line looks something like: vacat ? Martius igitur nuptio Aprilis 1832 sunt ? (something to do with March and April ?)

It looks like the O'Neill surname had a long association with Elagh, an Ouen O'Neel (Owen O'Neill) appeared in the hearth money roll of the 1660s:

Hi Gaffy,
Thank you once again for all your help, and all the very interesting links you send to me. I must admit I have trouble reading the marriage records, normally I can read old handwriting OK, but I did struggle and then I realised it was in Latin..??? But thanks to you I have got the information. I will put all what you sent on the tree. Thank you again. Regards Fran xx
