Ordering Bmd certificates by post

Do you have to apply for certificates using downloaded forms, or can you just give all the necessary information written clearly in a letter?

What timescale are we talking - assuming of course after 1837.  And are we asking about birth, marriage or death certificates?

Depending on timescale you can order birth and death certificates online from GRO, and obtain a .pdf file for £7.00 but you will have to pay by debit/credit card. I don't have any knowledge of local Register offices and whether they are open for business or not.  Marriage certificates can also be ordered via GRO, but they are paper copies and cost £11.00.

I require mainly marriage certs.
My printer is not behaving. It is a bit hit and miss🙄
I would like to write to theGRO in Southport and receive the certs in the post.

It does seem to be possible to order Certificates by post

Unfortunately, you would need to print a form for each certificate application so as your printer is not reliable that may present a problem.


The GRO site https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp
lets you order birth, death and marriage certificates online and will provide paper certificates via Royal Mail for any event, if that is what you want.

You do need to register on the site, then choose the option to Place an Order
Complete the details for each certificate you require and add each one to your basket till you have finished, then checkout to pay online.

NB as England has once again gone into lockdown the time frame for them to arrive by post will probably be longer.

Another option would be to contact the Registrar Office for the District in which the event occurred, and ask them if you can apply in writing but again the current situation will mean local registrars are trying to cope with fewer staff and may not be currently providing non urgent copy certificates.

As Bumblb says you need to apply online to GRO not by letter. You’ll need the reference details for each marriage which you can get from freebmd or subscription sites. Always use exactly as the name is spelt in the index and the exact ref of numbers and letters. Do this even if you think there’s a spelling error as they’ll only send certs that match what you’ve asked for.
As a point of information, if you had been looking for certain dates of births or deaths, you’d have been able to get the reference details direct on the gro site, but none of the marriage certs were included in a previous digitisation project.
Also never order certs from a subscription site as they charge extra, always order direct from gro.
