Charlotte Bailey
« on: Saturday 07 November 20 05:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
I am.researching my Great grandmothers line and have found out that her father's name was Benjamin Jones and his father before him was called Samuel Jones and mother Mary ann. On one of the census returns a Charlotte Bailey is listed as mother and is about 78 and lives with them. The census states she was born in Wellington Shropshire. I'm wondering if she's Samuels mother they now live in Staffordshire... he's s Jones and she is a Bailey so I'm assuming she has either married twice in which case how would I find her real maiden name from birth or she was a Jones and Samuel was illegitimate But stuck tbh and help gratefully received.

Have you found a marriage for Samuel Jones and his wife?   Could Charlotte be the mother of his wife Mary  :-\

Or...like many Scottish widows, reverted back to her maiden name?

It would be an idea to find Samuels birth/baptism to hopefully find out her maiden name.

Assuming this is the family in 1851 at Wolverhampton:

Samuel JONES     35       Bradeley
Mary Ann               33       Wolverhampton
Samuel                   10
Emma                      6
Benjamin                 2
Sarah                    7mnths
Charlotte BAILEY  mother  75   Wellington
H0107/2019 pg 23

I think these children's birth registrations indicate mother's maiden name RATCLIFF

Samuel's place of birth  in the 1851 census looks like Broseley to me. This seems to be confirmed by the 1861 census. Broseley is in Shropshire.
