Unusual request for photograph of a doorstep!
« on: Saturday 07 November 20 10:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi, my grandmother was Mary Cannon from Meenacarn, Letermacaward County Donegal. She had 10 brothers. At some stage over 100 years ago some of the brothers got hold of a large flat stone and engraved it with the words HOME SWEET HOME. THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME. It was then embedded in the ground at the front door of the cottage. To cut a long story short, I am aware the stone was relocated from the cottage to a new build house in or around the village of Forkhill, County Armagh. To be very clear, this is not an attempt to 'reclaim' the stone. On the contrary, I am delighted the stone found a new lease of life in front of what I assume is a lively, vibrant home. What I would love is a good quality scan of the stone so I can forward it to distant cousins in America who are aware of the story of the stone. If anyone knows the location of this stone, I would be most grateful if you could let the owner know of my request.

Thank you.

Have you also written to a local newspaper for Forkhill?

Where I am in the UK we also have a NextDoor app which contains local news items/items for sale/recommendations etc., and if that also exists for the locality I'm sure you'd get an interested response.

Good luck!

I should have added, is there a Facebook page for Forkhill?

you could try posting on the South Armagh and Proud community group Facebook page as Forkhill would be in this area.
Also Creggan  ( south Armagh ) Historical Society Facebook page .

What a lovely request
Im sure it will peak interest
Im a great believer in local radio and in this age of isolation im sure residents of Forkhill would enjoy an opportunity to do some virtual doorstepping

Have you also written to a local newspaper for Forkhill?

The two main local newspapers are based in Newry. The Newry Reporter and the Newry Democrat.
Forkhill is SW of Newry and close to the Ring of Gullion AONB.
