Elsie Lea marries Wilfred Ralph in 1914
Wilfred killed in action 1917

Daughter Jeanne Mary Ralph b 1915 named on pension record

daughter May Hartshorne Ralph born June quarter 1919 <<<<<<<<<<

Elsie Ralph marries Ernest Hartshorne

Ernest Hartshorne - 62, Warehouse Manager, Widower, 20 Arthur Road, Erdington, Birmingham
Elsie Ralph - 34, School Teacher, Widow, 71 Church Street, Burnley
    Groom's Father: Henry Haynes Hartshorne, Deceased, Commercial Traveller
    Bride's Father: Richard Sulley Lea, Tea Merchant

so May possibly known in general as May Hartshorne marries in her legal name of May Ralph

the other May on the 1939 record is not necessarily the other May's mother but a relative

Ernest of 20 Arthur Road dies in 1926, probate to Elsie, widow, more than £9000.

Think Elsie and Jeanne are on 1939 together.

This looks like Elsie's death:
Deaths September quarter 1973 in Worcester of Elsie Hartshorne, born 25th April 1890.
Probate of more than £100,000.

Pretty sure that that is Elsie in 1939 as Jeanne’s birthday matches that in the pension record. Interestingly daughter May is not with them.

May born 1919, Elsie does not marry until 1924, though think Ernest's second wife does not die until end of 1919.

Can see the use for the 1921 census to see who is where.

Have not worked out who May is though, and they do seem to travel around a bit.

There is a May Smith who marries a Clifford Hartshorne in 1919. Maybe some relative of Ernest (not a brother)

Maybe the Wood/Ralph marriage certificate would be useful to confirm or deny the guesswork

I think I was looking for a connection to George and May Hartshorne who I found on the ER's living at 895 Stratford Road in 1930.

Just reread opening statement:

highly unlikely that those in 1939 are not the 2 Mays.
