Thank you everyone for your assistance.   I would like to find more information on Harriett Lewis (nee Pyke) to see who her parents were.   As I've previously stated, she was aged 36 married in 1851 census with Edwin, Mary (maybe Letitia Mary) and Arthur aged 1 year and lodger Arthur Williams aged 26 years.   We now know that Arthur Lewis aged 1 year was actually registered as Arthur Williams, so it appears that the lodger was the Father.

We believe that Harriett Pyke had a sister Eliza Pyke, still trying to find the rest of her family.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me.  Regards Jan

Harriett appears to have a sister named Eliza Pyke who married a Lipscombe.

Hi
Yes indeed, Eliza married to John Lipscombe in 1851. Youngest child was Esther, 1, born Newbury.

So we can confirm Eliza's maiden name

LIPSCOMB, ESTHER       Mother's Maiden Surname: PYKE
GRO Reference: 1850  M Quarter in NEWBURY  Volume 06  Page 238

So Richard was off the scene, and Arthur Williams was around.

But where are they in 1861?

Mmm.... where is Harriett Lewis in 1861  ???

I would like to find more information on Harriett Lewis (nee Pyke) to see who her parents were.

As I've previously stated, she was aged 36 married in 1851 census with Edwin, Mary (maybe Letitia Mary) and Arthur aged 1 year and lodger Arthur Williams aged 26 years.

We now know that Arthur Lewis aged 1 year was actually registered as Arthur Williams, so it appears that the lodger was the Father.

We believe that Harriett Pyke had a sister Eliza Pyke, still trying to find the rest of her family.

As mentioned previously on the same 1851 census living next door to each other

Harriet Lewis (nee Pyke) bn Speen Berkshire (not found baptism on line)
John Lipscombe bn Marlbro Wiltshire occ chair maker master
(there is a bpt. on Anc*y for JL - 18th Dec 1819 Marlborough parents William & Mary)
wife Eliza Lipscombe (nee Pyke) bn Speen Berks (not found a baptism on line)

I think this is John on 1841 same occupation as 1851c but give pob as Berkshire
Piece:   17 Folio:   4 Page    2 - Speen Berkshire
John Lipschultz   26 Chair M
A possibility perhaps for Harriet on the next page PYKE family
Harriet age 16 with John 49 cordwainer & Eliza 45, plus 5 younger children
Sarah 9, Ann 7, John 5, James 3 & Edward 6mths

PYKE, JAMES       mmn FIDLER
GRO Reference: 1838  D Quarter in OF NEWBURY  Volume 06  Page 191

PYKE, EDWARD    mmn   FIDLER
GRO Reference: 1841  M Quarter in NEWBURY  Volume 06  Page 216

Eliza Lipscombe from 1851 census appears to be on this 1841  census with children John & William  and a  George Lipscombe age 19 is he a relation to her husband John?

Piece:   17 Folio:   5 Page Number:   5 - Speen Berkshire
Elizah Lepinski   23 Chair M
John Lepinski   5
William Lepinski   3
George Lepinski   19 Chair M

Marriage, Lewis-Pyke
Dec 1844 Newbury 6 432a
Lewis, Richard
Pyke, Harriet

I think you may have to obtain Harriet’s marriage certificate to confirm her father’s name & occupation

John, well we have the birth certificate now, he was registered as Arthur Williams b. 15.12.1849 Dredge Yard, Northbrook Street, Newbury.  Father Arthur Williams, Millwright, Mother Harriett Williams (formerly Pyke) aged 36 years.

Regards Jan

So you are saying that Harriett married Arthur Williams in 1850 ?   Under the name Pyke, rather than Lewis ??

Hi
No I am not saying they married then, but that son Arthur (your Arthur Lewis) might have been registered as Williams in 1850, and Arthur Williams and Harriett might have claimed to be married. Or at least whichever of them registered the birth told the registrar they were married.
I'm afraid the only way to find out would be to buy the pdf from the GRO.

Yes, having just gone through that information above, I realized that, so it appears then that if Harriett was 36 when son Arthur Williams was born in 1849, that would make our Harriett born in 1813.   The 1851 census shows her once again as 36 years of age.   One wonders also about this son Edwin Lewis aged 8 years also in this census, as we can only find an Edwin born in 1840.  Such a complicated family.   It seems that Arthur Williams took on the name of Arthur Lewis after his birth, could not find him in 1861 census, but found him in 1871, with his cousins the Lipscombes. Maybe Harriett decided that she would keep the Father's name from her Lipscombe family members.

I have found a death of a Harriett Lewis at Newbury in 1889 aged 76 years, maybe this is our lady, but where was she between 1851 and 1881.   Maybe Workhouse at some stage ??

Yes I agree we need Harriett's marriage certificate to Richard Lewis.
