McMin/Mackmin
« on: Monday 09 November 20 09:30 GMT (UK) »
I recently found one of my ancestor's wills which is on free download from National Archives Discovery now. John Mackmin, London, 1775.
Part of the  will is "much honoured father John Mackmin of the Parish of Maybol in the Shire of Ayr "

John junior was born around 1750, as indicated on his marriage to Elizabeth Sumner in 1771. I'm trying to find his birth record but there seem to be none fitting with Maybole around 1750.

There is a John son of John McMin New Abbey 1751, 60 miles away and a John McMin marriage to Margaret Narin Kirkcudbright 1749.

There are no real matches for Mackmin on Scotlands People.

Any help gratefully received!

I think I'd be looking a bit further back than 1750. Yes, some young men did marry at 21, but most were a good deal older before they could afford a wife - 25 to 30 is quite usual.

Ah, right, so he was born in 1749 or 1750.

Update on this. Find My past have a transcript only

John McMi? Father William , baptised 18.10.1730 at Drumbeg, Kirkoswald, which is very close to Maybole.

If anyone can source the original that would be very interesting.

His age 21 is stated on his marriage bond of 1771

Does it mean he is actually 21, or does it mean he is 21 or over and doesn't require parental consent?

There is also the possibility that John's father had moved to Maybole at some point after John's birth.

Thanks for that. Connection is unlikely then.

I re read the marriage bond sometime ago and its over 21. His wife was 26 on marriage

I doubt anyone in those days would move from London to Maybole, Ayrshire. More likely the other way.

Parental consent was never required in Scotland. You could (and still can) marry at 16 without any parental consent. It was one of the reasons young couples ran away to Gretna Green (and other border towns) to marry if their parents disapproved.

So age 21 has no legal significance here.
