Trouble with the Williams Family again
« on: Monday 09 November 20 12:37 GMT (UK) »
I am now checking the oldest child of George and Amelia and come across another problem.  George Williams born 1829 married Susanna Ascott Arne in 1863 at St Mary's church Olveston, the family moved to Princetown Devon where he worked at the prison as a warden, they went on to have 3 children. He died in 1877.

Now on ancestry hints George is married to Jane Woodward in 1858 St George's square London when they go off to Australia.  Also a line of family trees have the same information.

Well who is correct?  The George who went went off to Australia was born in Pembrokeshire Wales and Jane born in Willington Gloucestershire.  Unfortunately on the marriage translation for George and Susanna George's father is Richard Williams not George.

Rather confused hope someone can advice.

Thank you

Are you absolutely certain you have the right marriage in 1863?  Do the details for George on the 1871 entry correspond with earlier censuses?

Have you looked for the children born to the 1863 marriage after 1871?  If they are still in England then different family.

You have probably seen lots of comments here about errors on other peoples trees so go with what you actually know and can prove from your own research

Thanks for replying Carol,  George and Susanna are living in Devon with their 3 children Alice Mary b 1865, Eliza Emily b 1868 and Victor James b 1871 all born in Prince Town although their births were registered in Tavistock.  Their places of birth etc fit in with the 1871 census and if the marriage translation had not put down Richard Williams  as George's father I would have no doubt.  They married in the area they grew up in etc.

Unfortunately on the marriage translation for George and Susanna George's father is Richard Williams not George.

Just to add it does have Richard on the certificate so not transcribed wrongly.

Was father George still alive in 1863?

Richard is down as a labourer.

Both witnesses are Arne so no help there.

Groom is 30 so age a little out if he was born 1829.

The 1858 marriage to Jane Woodward has George farmer and father George farmer - was that correct occupation for "your" Georges?

George Williams's father was a butcher and he died in 1860 in Olveston.  Are you thinking that Amelia (George's mother) may of remarried?  Thank you for replying. So ancestry may be correct but why have George junior down as born in Pembrokeshire?

Have been trying to find George in 1861, I do not subscribe to FindMyPast so wandering if someone can find him on the 1861 census on that site?
