ID required to join army in 1884
« on: Monday 09 November 20 13:40 GMT (UK) »
Afternoon, would a young man joining the Royal Artillery in 1884 have to produce documents for ID purposes?

The reason I ask is my Great Grand Father joined up in 1884 under the surname of DONLAN however we now suspect this could be an alias or indeed false info.

Thankyou

Draper/Munford - Norfolk
Nicholas/Donlan/Thurston/Leach - India
Harrison/Cunningham - Durham
Caine/Harrison - Ireland

No. The army would record whatever name and age he gave at his attestation.

Innumerable 16 year olds joined the colours in the Great War.

Hi Skoosh, he didn't join for the Great War.  He attested in 1884

No idea why he would use a different surname.!

Who had a passport back then Seasider, let alone in the Great War. Possibly he joined up then parted company ;D so re-joined another outfit under another name?

Skoosh.
