Abbreviation
« on: Monday 09 November 20 14:56 GMT (UK) »
Can someone tell me if the abbrevation in the attached Parish Reg extract is "Infant".  It's from a list of burials and the number of them in that year suggests a high incidence of infant mortality.

I would see that as "Infant"

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I'm sure it reads Inft, so agree that it is 'Infant'.

Have you tried to find out if there was an epidemic of any kind that year? For example in the UK cholera 1831, 1832, 1848, typhoid 1831, 1832, diphtheria 1880, 1892?

Thanks to all.

I read it as "Infant".  It's from a 1796 register in Warwickshire.  I've not checked whether there was an epidemic although there are other docs that suggest there may have been a smallpox epidemic some time around then or the early 1800s.

Not sure if smallpox would particularly affect children.  I would have expected measles, diphtheria to be more likely, although cholera and typhoid are also candidates.
