Any ideas which school late sister may have attended?
« on: Monday 09 November 20 18:26 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping to find out which school my late sister may have attended during the war and wonder if any locals might have any ideas and might know if any  relevant school admissions and log books might exist.

My sister was born in 1938 I was told that during the war, she and my Mother went to stay with my Dad's Grandmother 'in Yorkshire' and that she went to school there.

I have found out that in 1939 and from this Great Grandmother's death cert that her home address was 10 Dixon Street, Lingdale in Skelton and Brotton. So I think that this was probably a long term address for Great Grandmother and where my Mother and sister likely lived with her.

My sister was Roman Catholic and attended an RC school when they returned to Tyneside.  So it might be that she would have attended a nearby RC school perhaps near Dixon Street if one existed.

Saltburn by the Sea?

She will have been at Primary school during the war, presumably, as aged only 7 at the end in 1945.

Thanks for responding IgorStrav.  Yes, she would have been young; I think probably only in the infants.  So I likely need to look for a Saltburn by the Sea primary school?  Is that the name?

http://ctlhs.co.uk/golden-jubilee/fifty-interesting-places/saltburn/

I found this website - I googled the address which pulled up Saltburn within Maps, and then if you 'search nearby' for primary schools then a number appear close to the address.

However, I've not got far as yet seeing if any were open at the time!

On the link above, it mentions that there was a single raid in 1942 where more than 100 houses were damaged.

Then this has a picture of Dixon Street

And if you Google the address again, you can find several houses which are/were once for sale to give you an idea

I think there are a lot of possibilities.

Looking at the map Lingdale seems to be equidistant from Guisborough and Saltburn or possibly even Loftus.

There was also a Primary school at Skelton.

Is there a local history society in the area that you could contact?

Thanks for the image as well Ivor.  Yes, I will look to contact a local studies or archives as it seems that the school might not be easy to identify.  Thanks Jen for this advice.

I wished I had asked my sister more questions about this when she mentioned this all those years ago.  Shame I left things too late.

Looking at the old maps, there appears to have been a Primary School in Lingdale itself, virtually at the end of Dixon Street!

https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/467357/516227/12/100571 if it says 'a subscription is necessary' just ignore it and click the 'minus' button top left of the map, until the map appears!
