Question about using the Ancestry half price link and tree records
« on: Tuesday 10 November 20 12:05 GMT (UK) »
I have used the link for a few years, having cancelled the renewal and waiting till the sub expires.

I don't have a tree on there but partially remember someone saying that if you do have a tree and sign up again with the same user name etc via the link your tree is still there but there was a caveat that if you had just 'attached' records rather than 'downloading and attaching' them you lose the visibility of the record on your tree.

I am trying to explain to someone about the link and they do have a extensive tree. Can anyone advise on the difference between 'attaching' and 'downloading and attaching'?

I am more or less assuming that attaching is an auto option and download and attach means you do it manually (perhaps in the same way you'd add records/ photos etc you have on your computer via another source?)

Hope that make sense and someone can tell me

thanks

Boo

Hi Boo

I have several large trees on Ancestry and have let my sub expire and used the half price offer with no problems.

All of the images I have downloaded directly through Ancestry are still there (census, BMD, etc.) and all other images I have uploaded myself from my computer are still there (family photos, certificates, documents etc.).  Also, any web links I have included remain on the tree.

Is that what you mean by "download and attach" and "attach" ?

Hi Jool

Thanks for clarifying. I can now go ahead and tell my contact that her tree will remain intact and if she uses the link to subscribe after the current sub runs out she can just pick up where she left off.

I have now found the original thread and it looks like I misremembered, probably because it didn't have any bearing on my particular circumstances as I don't have a tree on there.
The post I had read was describing the situation as it would stand in the short time between the end of the sub and the subsquent sign up via the link.

Thanks again

Boo

Yes that's right, you cannot see downloaded records after your sub expires, but they are all visible again when your sub is renewed  :)

pssst! we are not 're-newing' cos that would cost double.
As we are no longer subscribers we can use the link to 'sign up'
 :)

;D  We had better not talk about this any more in case "they" are watching.
Hope your friend enjoys her new "sign up"  ;)
