Remembrance Day November 11th

We will and should remember them, hopefully the 2 minutes silence will be remembered today and the door step 2 minutes as well

I remember when I was a child Remembrance Day used to be very seriously observed. The traffic would stop, - and this was in South London, and so normally busy, and people would stop and stand still where they were.

Obviously this year will be very different, but I will certainly be observing it.

In UK the terms are:
Armistice Day - November 11th
Remembrance Sunday - the nearest Sunday to Armistice Day

Back as far as I can remember, 1960s or so, the two minutes silence was observed on the Sunday, having been moved from the 11th some time earlier.

Then more recently, we started doing both, I'm not sure what anniversary prompted that.

Sometimes it is suggested making a bank Holiday out of it, but that won't happen.

  I rather wish it could be go back to being either one day or the other, instead of this somewhat confusing situation, but that would be difficult now. I suppose the silence on the 11th has brought it back to more prominence again.

Although I observe the Silence on Remembrance Sunday, I prefer to make a point of keeping a 2 minute Silence on 11 November, - since I retired this has always been at the nearest War Memorial.  Today (because of Social Distancing) I placed a poppy on the War Memorial at about 8am and observed the Silence at home.

We should pay tribute to those who died, but also think of all people whose lives were damaged by war.

This was observed at our secondary school today. All stood for the minutes silence . The bells of St Mary's at Shenley Church rang out till 11.11 and as students ventured outside again stopped to listen. We've had so many worries with covid this week it was lovely to listen to the bells and draw peace from them.

Canada observes Remembrance Day on Nov 11th - but we don't have a Remembrance Sunday (unless the date actually falls on a Sunday, in which case churches will also observe the day).  Banks and Government offices are closed, but schools, shops, etc., remain open so it's not a National Holiday.

In the past, it was a National Holiday (when my daughter was young, schools etc. were closed), but it was discovered that children were understanding less and less about why they had a holiday, and so it was decided to remove it as a National Holiday, and leave schools open so they could be taught about why we remember, and who we remember.

We had our usual/unusual Remembrance Day service at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, but the general public were asked to stay home (about 100 or so still chose to attend, with masks and social distancing observed).  There was no march past of the various military services at the end, and a planned fly past of vintage aircraft was sadly cancelled due to very low cloud cover over the city.  It was broadcast on the CBC (commercial free), and as always they did a wonderful job of putting it all together.

I too remember when it was the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
Everything stopped ,traffic , shops stopped serving , offices were still.
This was after WW2,
I was too young to remember prior to that but my parents said it
was strictly observed from its inception after WW1 .
They were 22 and 23 at the end of WW1.So would remember very well.
At street corners there were little glass fronted wall cabinets with the Roll of Honour for men from  that  street.Well in Manchester there were.
They were in poor state but could have been salvaged but sadly in the clearances of those districts they were just destroyed when the houses were demolished .
We were brought up to respect the silence.
