46th Foot Soldiers - UK, Regimental Registers of Service - 1810 onward
« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 11:27 GMT (UK) »
Hope this is the correct place to ask:

I was searching for William Chaffin. He was a "Miller" by trade, born around 1890, and married in Lyme Regis 1820 to a Mary Strong.

During my search, I came across a William Chaffon (Chiffen) who was a "Miller". And enlisted in UK, Regimental Registers of Service in 1810.  This Willam Chaffon served as part of the 46th Foot Soldiers from 17th Dec 1817 until 5 Sept 1819 (East Indies).

Name: William Chaffon
Occupation: "Miller"
Birth Date:   abt 1785
Birth Place:   Evercrack? (Evercreech), Somerset
Class Number: WO 25; Class Title: 46 Foot; Piece Number: 395; Piece Title: 46 Foot

I have found two military transcripts on Ancestry, but was hoping to find more military records on this William Chaffon from the 46th Foot Soldiers.

Any help is appreciated

Do I have his birth year correct?

Below, I've cut out the necessary pieces.
William's age here says he is 28 years. It also has the attestation date of 8 Nov 1810 and when he served as part of the 46th Foot Soldiers from 17th Dec 1817 until 5 Sept 1819 (East Indies).

If I use the attestation date as William's enlistment into the UK Regiment, this would make his birth year about 1782.  Is this correct or do I need to calculate back from 1817?

I read it as aged 25 in November 1810. So born circa 1785.

Not sure of the year.
Is that from a different document?

He was on a limited service engagement which was seven years for infantry. So he was discharged in December 1817 at Sydney, and did not go to India with the regiment.

Discharge place maybe Lydney.

I was hoping this William may have been the same William Chaffin (miller by trade) who Married Mary Strong (widow at time) in Lyme Regis, 10th July 1820.  So I'm trying to track down his parents and thought the soldier maybe him.

I also found this attached document from the prison registers from Lyme Regis that indicates his birth year was circa 1773. He appears to have similarities to the soldier and they were both millers. Although the birth year is too far apart.

Also came across a marriage for a Willam Chaffin and Phobe Hayter, Dec 1772 - who could be the parents.  Phobe's father was also a miller.

And a William Chaffin was baptized with the above parents in October 1773.

Maybe a match?
Or this part of the country appears to have a lot of millers by trade. :)
