What does M'37 mean?
« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 15:15 GMT (UK) »
I am looking at the BMD index for Herbert AK Keene born 1920, died 1976 and wondered what the comment ' see M'37 ' means as a page reference.

Not met this before.

I think it means that there will be a note on the M[arch] quarter of 1937.

ADDED: Yes here it is
Births Mar 1937
Keene    Herbert A K    Wells    Croydon    2a   743
Note on freebmd.org states
The above transcription represents what is in the GRO index but it is referred to by the following entry
Births 1920 Dec: Keene,Herbert A K,Wells,Croydon,2a,see m37
which implies that this is a late entry, that is an entry that has been registered in a quarter later than the event..
Seeking: RC baptism Philip Murray Feb ish 1814 ? nr Chatham Kent.
IRE: Kik DRAY[EA], PURCELL, WHITE: Mea LYNCH: Tip MURRAY, SHEEDY: Wem ALLEN, ENGLISHBY; Dub PENROSE: Lim DUNN[E], FRAWLEY, WILLIAMS.

I would think it likely that his 1920's birth may not have been registered until 1937.  The entry has been handwritten on the 1920 index page

Cross posted with Josey's addition  :)

many thanks for that information.

His father divorced in 1928 and Herbert was born to 'the other woman' before that which might explain the delay in registering.

It's a re-registration not a late one.

Genuine late registrations are really very rare - re-registrations are very common.

There is an entry in Croydon in 1920 ( under Herbert A K Davison)  that should be obtained.

Births Dec qtr 1920
Davison    Herbert A K    Wells    Croydon    2a   ____

There is a hand written note on that page as well, it looks as though the birth was registered in that name in 1920 as it appears typed on the index

ah, Davison makes sense.  I have no idea where the name mother's maiden name Wells came from. That will take more exploration.

Thank you so much for your help

Maybe the "other woman" was born as Wells, was married to a Mr.Davison and had that name at the time of the child's birth, then became Keene later
