Medal card info please
« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 19:29 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please tell me what it says in the box under "Corps", on the attached medal card, for my Great Uncle.

Also if possible, does anyone know if sources exist to find out what wounds he suffered, for him to be discharged

Regards

Thankyou Shaun & Gwil for your speedy replies.

The top of the card looks to refer to the Denbighshire yeomanry regiment, which is corroborated by a photo I have of him, presumably before his posting, which shows his cap badge. (Prince of Wales feathers) Is it likely, he was transferred to the Shropshire's, for some reason?

Given some of the horrific injuries that many suffered in that dreadful war, I'm sort of thinking that he may have got off lightly. He only lived for another 15 years though, so maybe something more sinister was going on inside. Family stories described him as quite a poorly man, prior to his early death.

Thanks again

He was one of about 150 2/1st DHY transferred to KSLI in September 1916.

They were posted to France, as DHY men, on 22 9 1916. (Men were needed to make up the losses of the Somme). DHY did not have a fighting unit in France. At the Infantry Base Depot they were posted to the KSLI on 6 10 1916 and sent to the front.

(Look at the actual medal Rolls and KSLI 26729 to 26881 are all DHY men. A perusal of existing records in this batch gives the pattern)

Stewart,

This link: https://www.shropshirearchives.org.uk/collections/getrecord/CCA_X8936_1916_11_4_345487
from the Shropshire Archives online catalogue refers to page 5 of the Wellington Journal issue of 25th November 1916.

As you will (hopefully) see in the 'details' section, amongst the names of Shropshire LI men listed as 'Wounded' is: 26834 W E Sleigh, Liverpool.

Thank you for that Willyam.

The thing that strikes me, is that he was wounded less than two months after being sent to the front, but it took another 9 months for him to be discharged.

Oops!...... I've just realized that I'd asked a similar question about a year ago and had some very informative information from a few people, especially Jim & Shaun. Had a few pc problems recently, but some of the answers from this thread sounded familiar.

So sorry to all :-[
