I have no idea if this is the right way to go about it, but it does put Robert and Margarette Bates near Regina.

-----
this site
https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1911/Pages/about-census.aspx#c

says "For Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, the location was noted by township, range or meridian such as "T. 14, R. 9, W. 3," for township 14, range 9, west of the 3rd meridian."

-------
The top of the page for Robert Bates says the enumeration district was Township 16, Range 21, West 2.
I went here:
https://gisappl.saskatchewan.ca/Html5Ext/index.html?viewer=saskinteractive

and, following the search examples in the left sidebar, looked up 16-21-2 for Township 16, Range 21, West of meridian 2

then I clicked on a few things in the left sidebar and found that by clicking on Section it gave a list of sections within Township 16 Range 21.

-------
Column 4 for Robert Bates says 11-16-21.
I assumed that 11 was his section number in Township 16, Range 21. I scrolled down to 11-16-21-2 and clicked on it.

eventually by zooming in, out, and waiting for the map to load I got the attached map.

------
I hovered the mouse over the tip of the pointy marker and the latitude/longitude indicator at the bottom of the map said
50.33145 N 104.78985 W

I Googled the latitude and longitude and Google maps also says it is not too far SW of Regina SK:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/50%C2%B019'53.2%22N+104%C2%B047'23.5%22W/@50.3897977,-104.7302114,11z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d50.33145!4d-104.78985

23.9 km, but shorter as the crow flies.

That map is attached also. The first one would be more accurate, because the second one depended on how accurately I hovered the mouse.

I meant to include
This agrees with what the census archive says here
https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1916/Pages/saskatchewan.aspx

"Townships 16, 17 and 18, range 21, west of second meridian, including the village of Grand Coulee - microfilm: T-21943"

Many Thanks oldohiohome :-)

I had tried that site earlier but had no real idea what I was doing.

Your instructions were easy to follow and I have managed to replicate what you did.

It does lend a little more weight to the 1911 census being the right one for William Robert and Margaret Bates, even though the births years aren't right.

Though Margaret in particular had a problem with her year of birth, she managed to make herself 10 years older than she actually was from 1926 onwards  and stuck with those extra 10 years till she died!

Really appreciate the help

Thanks
