My many apologies for misleading. I think I got the 1909 from an article on a family history forum about the hospital which gave starting date of 1909 but much further down it said it started life as the workhouse.

From some investigation online, t appears that Newsham General was the name of the hospital based in the old Belmont Road Workhouse buildings. Newsham Park Hospital was the one based in the Old Seaman's Orphanage buildings. I hope this has cleared up the confusion for everyone.
