Please could somebody give me the Census reference I need ? I found the institution by accident on an earlier occasion, but have had no luck finding it today. I have wasted a ridiculous amount of time looking for it. Thank you in advance.

I think Belmont Road Workhouse became Newsham General Hospital in 1909

Yes, that's right. I just need to find on the 1911 census when it was still a workhouse.

Have you looked for the person you are interested in rather than looking for the WH?

The family I am interested in are not on the index. That was the problem I had trying to find them originally.

There are two sets of returns for West Derby Union, Belmont Road
piece is 22406
images start 158 and 195 on Ancestry, several other institutions also.
try searching for William C Briggs b 1860 or Samuel George Booth b 1836

8rilliant ! I have downloaded everything possible for families I am tracing (for future reference), but somehow this census entry  got missed.  I only realised when another very elderly member of the family asked for a tree on paper, but I didn't have the 1911 details.. My tablet was running out of charge, so I couldn't thank you immediately. Your help is very much appreciated.

don't quite understand - if the Workhouse became Newsham Hospital in 1909 - why do you say it was still a Workhouse in 1911 ?? I went to the school next door to the Workhouse / Hospital - St Margarets High School - had a bad fire in 1962 and the school closed the next year .
the building was originally
The Liverpool Seamans Orphanage was formally opened on 30 September 1874 by the Duke of Edinburgh , the "Sailor Prince", fourth son of Queen Victoria ..
my question is - was it ever actually a Workhouse ??
From the outset the education of the children was given top priority, and from 1892 the boys' school, and from 1898 the girls' school were administered strictly under government regulations, and the institution received a share of the Parliamentary Grant from the Education Department.
In July 1900 the Swimming Baths were opened

so if it ever was a Workhouse - it was only between 1900 and 1909 - I don't think it was ever officially a workhouse ??

ADDED- It didn't become Newsham Hospital until 1954 - where did the year 1909 come from ??
QUOTE
Newsham Park Hospital

Newsham Park Hospital opened its doors in 1954. The hospital developed its own psychiatric department and received an influx of patients with severe mental problems.

The hospital officially stopped taking new patients in 1988, and by 1992 all remaining patients and staff were relocated.

Belmont Road Test House was built and opened  by the West Derby Union in 1889-1890. It catered for a number of able-bodied men and women who gave a day's labour in exchange for their food and accomodation.
See the Peter Higginbotham website http://www.workhouses.org.uk/WestDerby
There is no suggestion that it was originally built as a hospital, or that any of the original buildings survive.
The Liverpool Archives online  catalogue refers to the series of names used for it over time: Belmont Road Workhouse,  Belmont Road Institution and finally Newsham General Hospital.
