John Baker 1812-1894 of Marldon, Devon needs parents
« on: Saturday 14 November 20 21:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi There!

I have an ancestor who I know a fair amount about but he has no parents and I was hoping you could help me please?

This is what I think I know;

John BAKER was born in 1812, in Alphington, Devon
In March 1839, when he was 32, John married a 22year old bootmaker's daughter, Mary Reed whilst living with her in Milk St Exeter, near the Cathedral and the Farmer's Market. They had five children together;

1. George Reed Baker (butcher, S. Africa) 1842–1891; married Henrietta Jackson on August 18, 1868, in South Africa.
2. Jessie Ann Baker (d. age 8) 1846–1855; She died as a child in January 1855 in Totnes, Devon, England. COD unknown.
3. William Baker 1849–?; Farmer. disappears aft. 1871 age 22
4. Martha Baker (m. 1st cousin. then a candle maker) 1850–1921;
5. John BAKER Jnr (smelter) 1852–1921 - 2xg grandfather

John was a farmer his whole life and called his farm Hazelwood. It was about 40-60acres and he employed on average 2 labourers.
He died on June 15, 1894, in Marldon, Devon, England, having lived a long life of 87 years, and was buried in Lower Churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, Marldon.

I have not been able to pinpoint his parents but think they are William Baker and Sarah ?.

I know nothing about them and would love it if you could find out just a little more for me if possible. e.g. where they were born and what they did. Hopefully John inherited the farm. He also doesn't seem to have any siblings.

Thank you so much

Hi there

If you could get a copy of his marriage certificate that should have the name and occupation of his father.  Witness names can also be helpful.

The marriage entry says that his father was William, a farmer.

The witnesses seemed to have witnessed many of the other marriages, so no help there.

The ages you have are a bit off.

If he was born 1812 he wouldn't be 32 in 1839 nor would he be 87 if he died in 1894  :-\

There is a baptism record for a John Baker on 19 February 1812 at Alphington, parents are William and Sarah.

There is an image but it says nothing more than the transcription.

Oops thank you. I obviously haven't been careful. I was deciding on whether he was born in 1806 or 1812 and only recently thought that 1812 was the better choice. My Bad. Thank you for pointing this out. I will fix this to sweet ;D.

I was reluctant to include Harriet - why I don't know. He married Harriet Harvey in Oct 1876 when he was 64.

Thank you for all your help. Would you have any suggestions as to where I could find more about William Baker?

I have one candidate who was baptised 24th Jan 1790 in Whitestone, Devon; Father Thomas Baker  Mother Jane.

He married
Name:   Agness Bryant
Gender:   Female
Marriage Date:   18 Oct 1805
Marriage Place:   Alphington, Devon, England
Spouse:   William Baker
FHL Film Number:   916799

and or he then married
SarahRogers 28 Jul 1813
Marriage Place: Saint Mary Major, Exeter, Devon

I don't have a death date for any of them.

going by the dates William's son John was born a year before his parents married in 1812.
