I have modified my previous post, as he was the same man. but if you look in papers past with “Constable Joyce” as the search term, there are a lot of mentions  in Tairua.
He fell off a horse and was badly injured.

Definitely in Tairua from 1880. Possible mentions Auckland 1877 and Opotiki 1878
