Military records John Cross

Hello, I'm trying to find out whay great grandfather, John William Cross did during WW1.
He was born during the third quarter of 1883 in Heighington, Lincolnshire.
The 1911 census shows that he was living in Washingborough Lincoln.
His parents were John and Mary Cross and at the time of the war he was married to Daisy Cross with 2 children.
I have spent a long time looking, it would appear in the wrong place.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt during the WW2 blitz.  Those that survived can be found on the subscription sites such as Ancestry & FindMyPast

No record found for John and there are too many Medal Roll Index entries for his name to determine the right entry. 

Have you any clues at all about which regiment he served in?

Unfortunately not.... I would love to find out what regiment he served with. But thank you anyway for trying

There was a child Cyril born in 1917. What was JWC's occupation on the birth record?

It could be worth checking the 1918 Absent Voters records (available on paysites) to see if shows up.

In the 1911 Census, John Cross is working in Engineering as a Turret Lathe Setter.
This may mean that he had a Protected Occupation in WW1 and was involved in vital war work and so was exempt from military service.

Do you have any family information that he was in the army in WW1?
