Samuel Chambers b1840, Lincoln
« on: Monday 16 November 20 03:58 GMT (UK) »
In my tree I have a marriage in 1828 for John Chambers to Ann Chambers at Wragby.
Using baptisms for their children and later census they appear to move to Lincoln around 1830.

I've got a baptism in 1840 for Samuel Chambers, son of John (a labourer) and Ann, abode Broadgate.
A likely birth ref to match;
   CHAMBERS, SAMUEL       CHAMBERS
GRO Reference: 1840  J Quarter in LINCOLN UNION  Volume 14  Page 419

I can't find the family at all in 1841. By 1851 John is in the workhouse, Ann is living in Hungate Court, no sign of Samuel at all in either address or in any other census.

I can only assume he died pre 1851 and there is a possible match in Lincoln in 1850 but no burial listed on FindMyPast and the papers don't cover 1850 for a possible death notice.

Short of getting the cert which I don't really want to do just now is there anything else I can try?  I'm just bothered it might be a workhouse death like John in 1852 and the informant details prove useless as confirmation that he's "my" Samuel.

After several attempts I've now found the 1850 death on the GRO site, age at death is given as 42.

I'm stumped completely and the missing 41 isn't helping.

You haven’t mentioned the other children which would help to search 1841.

If I have found the right Ann in 1851 in Hungate Court, then this entry in 1841 looks to be the same family.

1841 651/23/9
John Chambers   35 ys
Ann Chambers   30 ys
William Chambers 15 ys
Eliza Chambers   7 ys
Joseph Chambers 5 ys
Louisa Chambers 3 ys

Do these names fit the baptisms you have?  No Samuel though.

You have put 'the papers don't cover 1850 for a possible death notice'

Highly unlikely that papers would have a death of a small baby/child of natural causes.

'I can only assume he died pre 1851 and there is a possible match in Lincoln in 1850 '

The only death for a Samuel Chambers in 1850 in Lincoln that I can see is for a man of 42.

Added:
Sorry, just read your second posting, was still making my way through the first one, and was thinking 42 referred to Father's age.

The death of a John Chambers in Lincoln in 1852 is of a 64 years old.  Is this the death that you are referring too?  It does not fit with that proposed 1841.  Where did you get his approximate birth year from?

Someone marrying (for the first time) in 1828 is more likely to be in their 20's than in their 40's, which, with a death at 64 in 1852 gives a birth year of 1787/1788.

In the workhouse in 1851 are John, 63,  Henry, 19,  George, 9,  and Louisa, 11.  Is this your family (they have been grouped together in the workhouse list)?

Who are you descended from?

If the son William is 28 in 1851 census, that was before the 1828 marriage?
