I can't find anyone in 1861 with initial E H*nley aged 18 - 24 in Scotland.

Is it likely one of the g/parents had died & father & son have gone to Ireland?

Do you know where in Ireland the family were?

Thanks Annie.  Yes, I've already checked Edward Scalon.  He is married whereas my Edward is single.  Thanks for the link.  Yes, I've tried loads of various search combinations and cant find either for 1861.  I've been wondering if  they went to Ireland.
Thomas and his (second) wife were from County of Roscommon, possibly from Kiltrustan.  (Cant make out the word ). Another theory I have (might be overthinking  ;D) is that Edward and Thomas were both ill and had gone somewhere.  Thomas died of 'bronchitis' in 1868 and Ann died of the same in 1875.  Could they tell the difference between tb and bronchitis? Thanks again Annie. Much appreciated.  :D

Can you post an image with the place name please to see if we can fathom it?

Thanks for confirmation of who was born where.

I tend to agree it should be Kiltrustan, however, unfortunately it won't help as the Irish 1861 census records were burnt.

All the older children's ages in 1861 are out by six years - Patrick is 10 (4 in 1851); Mary 8 (2 in 1851) and Ann 6 (3 weeks in 1851).

SP indexes them as in your transcription.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
