West Lothian Monumental Inscriptions pre 1855
« on: Tuesday 17 November 20 00:18 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with finding a grave for Alexander Black and his wife Jane Russell born circa 1770 / 1780
They were married on 5th October 1806 in West Calder.
Alexander was on 1841 Census living at Bushdyke, West Calder aged 70.  Also on the census is Jane Black aged20, possibly a daughter or granddaughter but unsure of that. If she was a daughter, Jane Russell would have been in her 50's.  No trace of Jane in 1841
Hoping that there is a gravestone for them

I've tried Family search but nothing. As I dont know where he died it's hard to check. He died between 1841 and 1851 as he isn't on the 1851 census.
On checking West Lothian monumental inscriptions, it's divided into different graveyards.

Bear in mind that in the 1840s West Calder was in Midlothian (Edinburghshire) so the booklet of pre-1855 West Lothian inscriptions may not include West Calder at all.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

There is a lot on the Net about the Black family, where your Alexander fits in I need to leave to you, here are two links , let me know if I can help further, I live in these districts.

If you can fit yourself into that, you have a huge History.

This is another Family History linked to Blacks of Bushdyke.

You've jogged my memory, mosstrooper.

This Alexander Black and Jane Russell feature in the booklet about 'The Blacks of Breich Water'. I think I have an electronic copy of it somewhere, which I'd be happy to share.

I also put all the people in the booklet into a tree, which I am also happy to share.

I'm not totally convinced, however, that the Alexander Black in the 1841 census at Bushdyke is the son of Alexander B and Grizel Russell.
