I'm hoping someone can help me out here!
« on: Tuesday 17 November 20 03:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to read this post! I am fairly new to digging into my family's history! I'm currently working on my mother's side.

A little bit of background:

Just over a year ago my grandfather had passed away. A few months ago my grandmother stumbled upon a very old looking family tree that is nearly the size of a dining room table! It was the "Playfair Family Tree".

I traced back from my great-grandmother (where the branch had ended, it seemed to end around that era) all the way back to my 9th great-grandfather Robert Playfair (1610-1658) and my 9th great-grandmother Christian Ritchie (birth and death are currently unknown).

Now, jumping down a few generations I had noticed that James Playfair (1712-1772) and (possibly) Margaret "Peggie" Young (1713-1805) had a child (amongst their 9 other children) which was written on the family tree as "Loiner Son".

I'm hoping someone can possibly shed light on what that means or even who it is? It has been bugging me ever since!

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to read this! Have a good day! :)

This may be a complete red herring - but "Loiner" is a name for a native of the town of Leeds.
NEILSON - Erskine/Bishopton, Renfrewshire and Glasgow
BROWN - Hamilton, Lanarkshire
CAIRNS - Hamilton, Lanarkshire
FINDLAY - Kirriemuir area, Forfarshire/Angus
PORTER - Tobermore, Derry, Ireland

Could it be as in 'fruit of his loins', eg the son of the father but not the mother (ie born to another woman)?

There's a very worrying absence of any primary records of this family in the indexes to the original records on Scotland's People. In particular the registers of baptisms of the parishes of Liff and Benzie seem to be mostly missing. See below.

And I would definitely not trust any tree on Ancestry, MyHeritage or any other commercial web site, and I'd be wary of unsourced information on Geni and similar free sites.

There is, however, quite a lot of information about Rev James Playfair, Minister of Liff and Benvie, via http://www.ecclegen.com/general-index-p/ which refers to a publication titled Four Perthshire Families and also to the Dictionary of National Biography (DNB)

Four Perthshire Families has been digitised by the National Library of Scotland and can be consulted at https://digital.nls.uk/publications-by-scottish-clubs/archive/79231665
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

If the tree is hand written it is possible that you could be misreading the word?

Can you give more details about the child who was "Loiner Son" eg his name, date and place of birth. Details of the other children might also help put the "Loiner Son" into context.
