Help with old numbers 1828 1829
« on: Tuesday 17 November 20 12:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi there from Down Under
Can anyone direct me to a site where I could see examples of old Irish numbers....?
The era would be for a document in County Clare -1828 or 1829.
Thanks in advance.

This may sound odd but what language is the document written in?

I am looking at "Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI" website.

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634800#page/14/mode/1up

I didn't want to post a screenshot of the numbers I would like deciphered due to the copyright statement on the website.

I'm wondering about the odd looking numeric figure that could possibly be an "8" at the top of each page ....

eg (1 ? 1 9) (1 ? 2 1) (1 ? 2 9)

Hope that helps with answers  :)

Yes I agree, it is an odd looking ‘8’. It looks as though it is falling over.
It is the year - 1829. If you scroll down it changes to 1830.

Thanks  :)
It would be just amazing after all these years and trips to Ireland if I happened to locate the baptism of my husband's Great Grandfather Michael O'Neil born c.1827 Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare..
Name of his father was also Michael, mother's name - not known.
Fingers crossed, especially with the ancient language style.

The records are in Latin and those are particularly difficult examples.

I have just looked on a subscription site which indexes the names but can’t see Michael.

This might be useful.
There are a couple of entries of baptisms with parents Michael Neil and Catherine Conway/Corway. (Entry shows O’Neil)

26th February 1830

Thanks so much for that heywood  :)

I had seen the 1830 entry, hadn't got as far as 1832.
Maybe it's the correct family - but oh how great it would be to find an entry with Michaelis as the filius...!

With the same parents (I wish).

If you have looked at the 2 entries, is this how you read them...?
...............................
26 February 1830 Catharina o Neil filia (daughter) michaelis & Catharina Conway sponsors Paulus o’Neil & margarita Conway
...............................
9 September 1832 Janeta filia (daughter) Michaelis O’Neil et (&) Catherina Conway Sponsors Patrictius Purtill et Bridgida Do. (ditto)
NOTE: Priest differs to next entry (?)
...............................

It gives me an incentive to keep on checking.
Thanks again
Barbara

Yes, that's what I have. I would think Janeta is Jane perhaps.

Often, in later records, ages vary so it’s best to look a couple of years either side.
The parish records are in a poor state and only begin abt 1829 so if Michael was born earlier than that, it is unlikely you will find anything.  :-\
