What was his occupation on his children’s birth certificates?

If he was living on Ware Road, you might expect him to be within a reasonable distance of his place of employment. I can’t see a Fertiliser Factory around Hertford or Hertingfordbury on this map series:
https://maps.nls.uk/view/101579472

It could be that is is further away or was not built at the time of this map

I am not sure if this is possible, but I wonder if there is any way to locate a fertiliser factory in a directory.

Many thanks for your very useful research tip.  Thanks to you all I believe that I have found this 'Artificial Manure Factory with its own railway sidings on the 1938 Six inch map!

Many thanks for all your lateral thinking!
I have written to the Hertford Museum.
I wondered if 'Fertilizer Factory' might be a euphemism for War Materials establishment such as
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waltham_Abbey_Royal_Gunpowder_Mills

"During World War II, Waltham Abbey remained an important cordite production unit and for the first two years of the war was the sole producer of RDX. RDX is one component of torpex, the explosive that was used in the Bouncing Bomb."

An online tree at Ancestry says he worked at Waltham Abbey. Factory could have changed from fertiliser to Gunpowder when the war started. Potassium nitrate used for both

Fertiliser factory may not be same place as gunpowder factory, there are lots of buildings labelled works or factory close to railway line south of Broxbourne and down as far as Edmonton. Hertford east is on Broxbourne branch then joins main line down to Liverpool street.

Chempat,

Poo and pickaxes!
What a great article.  Where there is muck there is money!

I was interested in the advert for The Farmers Fertiliser Company of Royston [now sadly ceased trading].  I have written to Origins Fertilisers to ask about Company history and archives?

[FARMERS' FERTILIZER COMPANY LIMITED (THE) was a Private Limited
Company, registration number 00231822, established in United Kingdom
on the 7. July 1928. The company was dissolved. The company was in
business for 92 years and 4 months. The company used to be located at
IMMINGHAM DOCK, IMMINGHAM, LINCOLNSHIRE, DN40 2NS. Business of the
company FARMERS' FERTILIZER COMPANY LIMITED (THE) by SIC and NACE code
was "9999 - Dormant Company". There are 59 company documents
available. The most recent document is "FINAL GAZETTE: DISSOLVED VIA
VOLUNTARY STRIKE-OFF" from the 2002.05.07. The latest accounts are
filed up to 2000.12.31]
========

Judging from your name tag I guess you have a background in this area!

"Hertford to Ware is almost 20 miles - very temporary lodgings, as think car needed?"

He does have extensive family in Hertford, but for some reason in 1939, his wife and
children [also possible lodgings] at Holborn Farm House, Dane End, Therfield, North Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire, SG8 9RH

My next task in following his varied career is in RAF Intelligence to the Nurnberg War Crimes Trials as a Translator / Interpreter.  Any ideas welcome!
