Hannah Pope  NEE PRIDDY 1809–1871
BIRTH ABT 1809 • Burton Bradstock, or nearby Bridport, Dorset, England
DEATH 17 APR 1871 • ST GEORGE IN THE EAST, Middlesex OR THANET Kent ???
2nd great-grandmother

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/MMH4-FMQ

My gggmother Hannah 1809-1871 claims to be born BURTON BRADSTOCK or nearby BRIDPORT  1851,1861 but I fail to find any nearby PRIDDY families.
The nearest are in CHARD but the earliest male death is:
 Deaths Dec 1891   (>99%)
Priddy    Jacob    64    Chard    5c   327

There are a few more families in Somerset around Clutton district near to the village of Priddy 10 miles from Clutton and 44 from Bridport.
No luck at Dorset Parish Clerks
PRIDDY does not seem to be a very common surname but I am stymied!
Where did they all go!?

Thank you Biggles,
I have searched all the Dorset OPC records but without any finds so I eventually asked for help.

It's quite possible that Hannah's mother simply returned to her own mother for a first birth, so Mr Priddy (Hannah's father) never resided in Dorset.

Have you looked at alternative spellings of Priddy?
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

James and Hannah married at Old Charlton, Kent (near Woolwich) a long way from where she was born. If she was illiterate and unable to spell her name, the priest, who was unlikely to have a knowledge of Dorset spellings may have just spelt it as he heard it. Hannah's husband James Pope is a lighterman. As Burton Bradstock is a coastal village, maybe her father was also a mariner / fisherman.

Hannah Pope  NEE PRIDDY 1809–1871
BIRTH ABT 1809 • Burton Bradstock, or nearby Bridport, Dorset, England
DEATH 17 APR 1871 • ST GEORGE IN THE EAST, Middlesex OR THANET Kent ???

You have two possibilities for place of death - have you got death Certificate(s)?

There is a burial at Kensal Green Cemetery on 20 April 1871 of a Hannah Pope aged 60 (calculated dob 1810-1) Abode: 15 Clarence Terrace Ramsgate. As the burial date is only a short time after the 1871 census was taken, I checked who was resident at 15 Clarence terrace. It was another Hannah Pope age 60 born Leeds Yorkshire, widow living on dividends. With her are Sarah Hooker unmarried age 30 born Farringdon, Berks occupation attendant and Emilene Hooker age 11 b Oxford, visitor (probably relative of Sarah).
So it looks like the Ramsgate/ Thanet Hannah is the one buried at Kensal Green. Having a live in attendant indicates she was sick.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

The Hannah who lived in Ramsgate was late of St Mark's Crescent, Regent's park and died at 15 Clarence terrace Ramsgate on 17th April 1871. Probate granted to her brother John Leadbeater of 17, Hillside Villas Bradford, Yorks - warehouseman. Effects under £450.
An address in Regent's park makes more sense for a burial in Kensal green. Perhaps she was just visiting Ramsgate for her health and sadly died there.

Many thanks for all your ideas and research.
I have explored PRIDDY AND PRIDDIS but I will now explore PRIDE and PRIDDLE and PRID*
Her 4 children were all born in St John Horsleydown, Bermondsey, Surrey, England 1832-1844.

The two deaths:

Deaths Jun 1871   (>99%)
Pope    Hannah    60    Thanet    2a   472
Pope    Hannah    62    St. Geo. East    1c   283
I chose Hannah from St George in the East as this is where she lived for several decades, but interestingly her husband James was born in Ramsgate, THANET.
There may be a connection with his POPE family that I have yet to establish.
I will now buy a Death Cert to be certain.

I will also track the other POPE family in St Mark's Crescent. [my Father used to live in this road in the 1960's].

I have also been uncertain of the correct death of James Pope after he re-married on 13 Oct 1872  to the widow:
Sarah RAIL or REAL NEE ROGERS OR PENROSE ???
1817–1885
BIRTH ABT. 1817 • St.Austell, Cornwall, England
DEATH MAR 1885 • ST GEORGE IN THE EAST, Middlesex

Death of James POPE, I have as SEP 1888 in HENDON chosen largely by age, but I have not found any other POPE family in that district. Another certificate to buy!
Deaths Sep 1888   (>99%)
POPE    James    80    Hendon    3a   88
