West Riding Mental Hospital, Menston - Edward Gibbons
« on: Thursday 19 November 20 13:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi I would dearly like to understand and access records of my direct ancestor Edward Gibbons born in 1873 at Sleetburn Colliery, and died 30 NOV 1948 in West Riding Mental Hospital, Menston, Leeds.

Any advice or assistance in researching the details surrounding his stay in Menston and death would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you so much PaulineJ.
I'll try and get in touch with the West Yorkshire Archive Service and see where we go from there.

If any patient of the mental hospital died after 1919 their medical records are subject to the 100 year rule. Because you are a direct descendent you could apply to the local NHS Trust to access the records and you would have to provide proof of your lineage, they could still refuse you access though.

You could order a PDF version of his death certificate from the General Register Office.
The certificate would have the cause of death.

One of the carers of your direct ancestor would have been my late Mother in Law.

There was no kinder, more caring person.

Hello Dave,

I noticed your post re High Royds at Menston.

There is a chap, Ross Farrally, who is on Facebook in a group called 'Memories of Bramley' who has recently published a book on High Royds.

High Royds Hospital: An Insight into Insanity

I appears to be on Amazon in a Kindle edition, perhaps that may be of interest to you.

Hi

The Edward Gibbons who died 1948 was 65 so born 1883 - not 1873.

Hi CaroleW, you are right! I took a closer look and somehow had the birth date wrong, my Edward Gibbons ancestor was indeed born 1883. How did you come about the information please?

Also, thank you for all comments.
