Martin/Bell families from Bo'ness RICHARD BELL MARTIN
« on: Thursday 19 November 20 17:56 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me find records for Richard Bell Martin, born 31/12/1914 in Bo,ness to John and Janet Martin (ms Bell)?
I believed my paternal grandfather to be called James but now Im wondering if he is Richard. The only record I can find for James Martin is his marriage cert to my grandmother but I have a birth cert for Richard and a POW record card from Singapore in WW2. Richard and James were both steel workers and have 10 years between their age- I'm thinking for whatever reason he may have changed his first name by the time he married my grandmother and possibly made himself 10 years younger...

Death record for Richard Bell Martin
1974 Bromley Greater London age 59 years
Birth date 31/12/1914

Pow record lists his parents as John and Janet Martin

On the marriage certificate to your grandmother what name is listed for his father ? and occupation ..

As you have Richard's birth certificate already, when and where does it say his parents were married?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks Monica a bit clearer now ..Several trees on Ancestry with no mention of Richard Bell Martin
But they do have a James Martin born 1926 Bo'ness  which ties in with information on previous posts

One of the trees on ancestry with James will be mine and I’m aware of another that used my information. I
Can’t find any trees with Richard. Both men are either 1- two separate sons of John and Janet Martin
2- the same son who changed his name/year of birth (I remember my grandmother saying he lied about his age in the army/to go to sea)
Or 3- Richard is the son of Janet and John and James is their illegitimate grandson brought up as their son
I can’t get any real information on the Richard Martin that died inbromley

The 1951 marriage for James was in Falkirk. I think one of the witnesses to the marriage mentioned in the other thread was the daughter of Annie Martin b. 1912. She married in 1933 to a Williamson. The witness's name was a Williamson and named after her grandmother Janet Bell.

Would be good to see the rest of the details from the marriage, in particular parents' details.

misses123, was your grandmother the bride from the 1951 marriage? Is it at this marriage that he showed as divorced?

Would think that would be his death in 1974 in Bromley Greater London
Not sure what records are on death certificates in England but might be worth getting
