best program for backing up files

Hello,I would just like to ask the group which is the best program(free if possible) to back up my gedcom files (Ancestry) as when I download them to save  it is just lines of info,Any idea's

A GEDCOM file is a text file; but a specialised text file!

It doesn't contain any images.

So just store it on your PC

I store all mine in My Documents, in a folder called Genealogy.
Each GEDCOM file is named after the tree it came from, or the main family name.

In addition to what KGarrad says I would suggest using (buying) an external drive to use solely for backups. Copy all your images/pictures to a folder on that external drive manually (i.e. open the folder holding your images, click select all, and rag and drop the files to the new folder).
Store your other backups on this drive then disconnect it from your computer until you need to use it again to back up other files or you need to use a back up.
One of the most frequent failing on computers is when the "master index" is corrupted, this happend when the computer or drive is running, if you disconnect the backup drive until you need to access it  that will be saved form being corrupted during such a failure.

Thanks for that i thought I would have to buy another Family tree program to back up the family trees.I did a new folder & dropped the gedcom's into it,a pity I cannot drop all the cencus , DOB and other records I found into said folder

I made a point of saving images to my PC, and storing them in a relevant folder

If you want an offline copy of your online ancestry tree, complete with all the attached records, then unless things have changed recently the free version of RootsMagic will do this for you.
