Family history programme

I'm in need of a new family history programme.

Can anyone recommend one that's easy to install and use?

You don’t give any indication of what you have been using.

They are a matter of personal choice, I suggest you download several demo programmes and try them out to see which suits you.

Sorry, I should have said that I've been using TMG (The Master Genealogist), but have just got a new pc, so I'm now on Windows 10 which is quite an upgrade from the XP that i had previously. The problem is that  TMG is now defunct and wont work on Windows 10.

Thanks for any suggestions

I'm using a very old version of Family Tree Maker which works well on Windows 10 so I assume an up to date version would work well too.  Good luck   :)

Have you tried using Windows 10 in compatibility mode?

In compatibility mode the program uses settings from an earlier version of Windows.
Use this setting as you know the Master Genealogist worked with your old version of Windows.

To be more exact, using Windows 10 Compatibilty mode MIGHT allow a  program that worked on an older version of windows to work.

For many programs it still doesn't work and just tells you it is incompatible with this version of windows. It's still worth a try, but don't be too surprised if it doesn't work.

The upcoming Version 7 of Family Historian  may be what you're looking for.  The developer has said,
"Version 7 will include a powerful TMG import routine incorporating code version for TMG codes."

In the meantime you can take a free trial of Family Historian v6 to get a feel for it.

Hello everyone

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The local computer expert set everything up for me and he couldn't get TMG to work ( I will check with him that he tried the compatability mode)   so I will look at the other suggestions.
