Uniform ID for Charlie
« on: Friday 20 November 20 02:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I found these two postcard/photos among family papers. The man in uniform is "Charlie", and it looks like him front right in the group photo. Can someone please help identify the uniform(s)?

The individual photo is a postcard, but with nothing handwritten on the rear.

The group photo is postmarked Ilford, 3 Nov. The year is unclear but may be 1914. (The card is addressed to: Mr S E Bowrey B.Sc., “Westwood”, 115 Hainault Road, Leytonstone. Message reads: "Dear Stan, Unless anything turns up in the way of duty, shall be free on Saturday, say from 3.30. If this is convenient to you please let me know. Sorry I was out when you called. Charlie." S E Bowrey is Stanley Edward Bowrey, a relative. Whether Charlie was a friend/colleague/relative, I don't know.)

Thanks!

The group photo are "other ranks" in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
They have a Red Cross badge on their upper sleeve and the cap badge looks right.

The photo above is an officer (2nd Lieutenant), his cap badge could be the The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment:

If this man is in the group photo he became an officer at a later date, perhaps.

The group photo is no later than 1918 as it has an 1/2d stamp.
Postage went up to 1 1/2d in 1918 & down to 1d in 1922.
As the men are wearing the pre 1916 economy tunic would make 1914 about right.
